Traditional Acceleration
Add More Resources
• Can be highly effective, if managed appropriately and resources are available
• Elevates headcount at site, which may create an increase in field staff and demand for construction equipment – thus, likely to add costs to project • Possible inefficiencies created by too many people causing congestion
Overtime
• Can be relatively easy to do
• Possible inefficiencies created by extended work hours • Fatigue can creep in if used extensively – which could create a safety risk
• Can be highly effective if focused and not done for an extended period
• Likely will add costs to project
Multiple Shifts
• Does not require additional tools and construction equipment, unless work is performed outside, and temporary site lighting equipment would then be needed • Can be highly effective if additional shifts are focused only on critical and near-critical work (thus using less workers) • Common tactic and degree of overlap can be adjusted to suit the project situation. • With good planning of the work and creating effective work packages to create effective “phasing” of work, this approach can work well and be less expensive than the traditional acceleration tactics listed above • By removing work from the site and shifting it to a more efficient assembly environment (factory, shop or Mod yard), schedule can be improved – if the decision to use this tactic is made early enough in the project.
• Will require more field staff to manage additional shifts; thus, likely to add costs to project • Requires additional shift handover meetings daily. • Possible inefficiencies for work in night shifts • Tactic loses its agility when changes occur; in worse case situations the effect of rework negates the advantages created by overlapping. • Depending on degree of overlapping, design of certain portions in the early phases may create too much flexibility or oversizing before later portions are evaluated. If oversizing occurs, this will add costs to the project. • Requires careful planning and early decisions to capture the schedule advantages. • Likely to bring additional costs for equipment to transport or install assemblies or modules to the site
